Humanities Week 2025: Democracy, Discovery and Debate at Woolwich Poly

What an unforgettable week for our Humanities Department! From the moment students walked through the doors on Monday, greeted by amazing costumes, the excitement was electric - and it only grew from there!

Our school was buzzing with interactive challenges and thought-provoking activities, including:

  • Guess the Figure Behind the Mask – Could you uncover the historical icon and their incredible story?
  • Where in the World? – Staff on the move, Geography skills put to the test!, can you guess where each staff member was?
  • Humanities Newsround – Our very own current affairs debate, keeping students informed and engaged on all things Humanities in the news.
  • Horrible Histories Quiz – A hilarious, homemade challenge packed with quirky facts and fun for our form groups to take part in.

And that was just the start! Tuesday saw the Year 12 Polyversity Challenge - a fierce battle of brains after school—while GCSE Citizenship students transformed classrooms into live courtrooms, bringing justice to life in unforgettable scenes.

This year, Humanities Week proudly coincided with UK Politics Week and UK Disability History Month, making our celebrations even more meaningful. Students explored the History of Disability in the UK, diving into attitudes during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and will continue this important journey throughout the month.

Politics took centre stage as we held our own school-wide general election! Year 12 Politics students represented major parties, campaigning hard before the whole school cast their votes. The result? Labour stormed to victory with 40% of the electorate! Democracy in action - what a moment!

And the excitement doesn’t stop here…

  • In January, we’ll welcome a local Lord to continue our celebrations of Humanities.
  • Next term, GCSE History students will head to the National Archives for an incredible educational visit.
  • And of course, we’re already counting down to next year’s Humanities Extravaganza!

A huge thank you to all staff and students who made this week vibrant, inspiring, and unforgettable. Humanities at Woolwich Poly isn’t just a subject - it’s an experience, and this week proved just how powerful that can be!
