Heads' Introduction

E40B80AD-9F58-1395-7067822BF8B8FE2FWelcome to Woolwich Polytechnic School, one of the leading schools nationally and one of the few in London with consistently high results. We have a relentless focus on ensuring that your child achieves the very best outcomes in the pursuit of ‘Success for Everyone.’ By choosing our school, you are giving your child the best opportunity to be happy and successful.

We are rated Outstanding by OFSTED and hold the Exceptional School status. In 2016, we also received Outstanding from OFSTED for behaviour. We support over 20 other schools in London and beyond through our work with the Partners in Excellence (PiXL) Club. These collaborations are important as they reflect sharing of best practice and our drive to always be the best.

We outperform our local grammar schools in a number of measures and we have now gone one step further to help our most able students by introducing our Grammar School Intake (GSI), a curriculum tailored to meet the needs of the more able students based on a grammar school approach to extending top-end achievement.

Students receive specialist lessons with similarly able contemporaries plus an enriched extra-curricular programme. The end goal is attendance at one of the top universities in the country.

However, we would like to stress that life at the Poly is about so much more than the classroom. Our pastoral system is truly exceptional and we pride ourselves on the quality of care for every student. At Woolwich Poly, our overriding priority is to ensure that students are safe and happy – only then can they achieve great things. Our pastoral system and our whole way of working is grounded in a highly inclusive and steadfastly secular ethos: we believe that this provides the best basis on which to enhance our community relations and develop our students to be leaders within our communities, respecting the differences amongst us that are our collective strength.

The richness of our extra-curricular activities means that we have triumphs in sport, drama and music and an exceptional student council that has represented the school on a number of occasions and made a major impact on the local area.

Our heavily over-subscribed, co-educational sixth form continues to go from strength to strength with 20% of our students securing places at the top Russell Group universities – double the London average. This year, students have secured places at Cambridge and two students leave us to study medicine. Students experience the highest quality lessons and the opportunity to attend cultural events such as the opera, theatre and dining out in London restaurants. The result is that students leave us as self-assured adults, ready to face the next step on their journey to success.

We are pleased to report that plans are going well for the girls’ secondary school, which is due to open in September 2019. We will release further information as we are able and should have plans to share with you during the autumn term.

Whatever your interest in the school, you are always welcome to visit. Please come and see for yourself.
